IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • How do order pick ups work?
Transporting Chickens When you pick up your chick(s) and pullet(s) please bring a box or pet crate that can accommodate the quantity of birds you will receive. A cardboard box is sufficient as long as you can close the top of the box, and holes should be provided for air. A dog/cat crate works well also. No special bedding is required. Upon Arrival to Chicken D Ranch Please have your box/crate with you. When you arrive, call/text 218-590-4777 or 218-343-3677. We will have your order sorted out and ready to go! Our birds are picked out and packaged for you on the day of pick up, so it is important that pick up times are respected and followed as closely as possible. Orders must be picked up on-site at the farm on the date specified when you place your order. If you are unable to pick up your birds on the original date, please contact us ASAP so that we may reschedule with you.
  • What is a chick?
A chick is a newly hatched baby chick! The chicks you receive from Chicken D Ranch will all be less than one week of age. Generally, chickens are referred to as chicks until they become 'pullets' at around 8 weeks of age. Chicks require a little bit of extra care that their mother hen would normally provide- a heat source, protection from larger birds (think separate housing), special feed and extra attention to prevent health issues. Chicks are a fun way to get the full experience of raising your flock. Our chicks are all delivered as Straight Run. Their gender is unknown and we cannot guarantee the gender of chicks.
  • What is a pullet?
A pullet is a chicken that is at least 8 weeks of age and has fully feathered out. Pullets do not require an additional heat source, as a baby chick would, and are ready to be introduced to your coop. If you are a first-time chicken owner, pullets can be a great way to start your flock without the need of extra care that chicks require for the first 8 weeks of their lives. Our pullets are all delivered as hens. If you accidentally receive a cockerel, we will happily exchange for a hen or refund your money.
  • What is the definition of 'Straight Run'?
Straight Run chicks are baby chicks that have not been sorted by gender, but remain the same % as they hatched - which is generally 50/50.
  • What kind of chicken should I buy?
The answer to this varies depending on your needs and desired experience. Each breed of chicken offers their own unique characteristics to add to your flock, so we suggest researching the chickens you are interested in to make sure they'll be a good fit for you! Should you buy an chick or a pullet? When you buy an 8 week old pullet, heat lamps are not required. A chick requires a heat source of 95 degrees and you must monitor and drop the temperature/heat lamp by 5 degrees each week until you reach the outside temperature or the chick has fully feathered and no longer requires heat. Our chicks are all 'straight run' so the gender of the chick is unknown. We do not guarantee the gender of our chicks. Pullets are delivered as hens, unless you request otherwise or there is a 'whoops!'. If you receive a cockerel in your pullet order we are happy to exchange for a hen or refund your money.
